IGP’s call for stricter monitoring of roadblocks timely, says Johor police chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The call made by the country's top cop for police personnel to properly conduct roadblock duties, is timely, says Johor police chief.

Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said he has instructed all police personnel and officers to man the roadblocks properly, heeding the call of the Inspector-General of Police.

"What the IGP said is true, there are some cases where roadblock duties were not done properly.

"Based on our observation and feedback from the public, it is definitely happening but only with a small number of roadblocks," he said when contacted on Saturday (March 13).

Conducting roadblock duties responsibly is vital towards preventing the spread of Covid-19, he said.

"Each check at roadblocks should be done the right way.

"We don't want instances of personnel simply waving at passing cars during checks.

"Checking at roadblocks is a big responsibility thus we must give our best," he added.

Comm Ayob said he himself has encountered instances where roadblocks were not properly manned.

"The personnel and officer in charge were reprimanded.

"Thankfully, the majority of roadblocks conducted in the state are being done properly and professionally," he said.

Currently, 33 roadblocks have been set up in Johor.

"Some 19 roadblocks were set up for the conditional movement control order while 14 others are for Ops Benteng," Comm Ayob said.

While conditional MCO has been imposed in Johor, he advised the public not to go out unless it is for urgent matters.

"The fight against Covid-19 is far from over.

"We all have to play our part in curbing the spread of the virus.

"Members of the public should always comply with the Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP)," he said.

On Thursday (March 11), the IGP instructed all state police chiefs nationwide to ensure that all police personnel carry out their duties responsibly at roadblocks.

IGP Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador had said action will be taken against any personnel member who failed to fulfil their duties at roadblocks successfully.

He also called for stricter checks and to look out for SOP violations, especially those who attempted to travel inter-state illegally.
