PETALING JAYA: Senior management of the company that designed TuJu must be held accountable for any inaccurate information fed to the Federal Government on the navigation app, says Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
He was responding to the statement by Highway Authority chairman Datuk Seri Ir Hasni Mohammad that TuJu was not designed to compete directly with Waze or serve as a full replacement for it.
Fahmi was speaking to the media after the launch event for the Journalists' Health Screening Program - a joint collaboration between the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) and Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL) here on Saturday (Oct 31).
“TuJu is an application under the purview of the Works Ministry and the Highway Authority.
“If their representatives provided any information during the meeting, they must take responsibility for what was communicated.
“In my view, if any inaccurate information was presented, the senior management of the organisation concerned must be held accountable.
“That is the Government's position. They must be made to account for whatever advice or information they have provided.
“We leave it to the relevant authorities to take whatever action they deem necessary,” said Fahmi.
He stated that the issue concerning TuJu falls under the purview of the Works Ministry and it is up to the ministry to summon the Highway Authority on the matter.
The Waze-TuJu controversy began after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysians to stop using Waze over concerns about national security and data privacy, citing the application's Israeli corporate links.
He then encouraged the use of TuJu, a locally developed navigation application.
After an order banning civil servants from using Waze for official purposes, TuJu subsequently experienced technical problems following an increase in downloads and users.
The controversy intensified after Hasni clarified that TuJu was never designed to replace Waze or other mainstream navigation applications.
He explained that TuJu was launched in November 2025 through a collaboration between the Highway Authority and Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd, to provide highway-related information, including traffic conditions, toll charges, exits, rest areas and emergency assistance.
