Covid-19: Marang Prison, Dungun correctional facility to be placed under EMCO

PUTRAJAYA: The transit detention centre located at the Marang Prison as well as the correctional centre in Dungun, Terengganu will be placed under enhanced movement control order beginning Thursday (Jan 28) following a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said as of Jan 26, health authorities carried out 1,262 tests in Marang Prison, with 98 testing positive.

“However, health authorities noted that the positive cases only involved detainees that are located at the transit detention centre.

“With the advice of the Health Minister, the government has agreed to place enhanced MCO at the centre involving the block housing prison officers training centre, Zone 2 and Zone 3 of the Marang Prison from Jan 28 until Feb 10, ” he said on Wednesday (Jan 27).

He said that for the Dungun correctional centre, 1,102 screenings were carried out as of Jan 26, with 99 of them positive for the coronavirus, involving 92 detainees, two staff and five close contacts.

Ismail Sabri said the correctional centre will also be placed under enhanced MCO from Jan 28 to Feb 10.

He said standard operating procedures for the order will be implemented, including no movement in and out of the localities placed under lockdown.
