GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has granted PLB Engineering Bhd (PLBE) an extension of time (EOT) until Oct 18 to complete the proposed closure and rehabilitation works at the Jelutong landfill.
State local government committee chairman Jason H'ng Mooi Lye said PLBE’s application for the extension was tabled at the state executive council meeting last Wednesday (Aug 5).
The project involves the safe closure of the Jelutong Waste Disposal Site (TPSJ), preparation of a new site for the disposal of construction waste and marine clay, as well as development on the rehabilitated site.
“Based on the presentation, the state government decided to grant an extension until Oct 18 this year, ” he said in a statement on Monday.
H'ng said the decision took into account the need to complete the remaining works and ensure that all conditions and requirements set by the relevant technical agencies were fulfilled.
He said that the extension was also in line with the agreed project planning and took into consideration the interests and needs of all parties involved.
“The state government will continue to closely monitor the implementation of the project to ensure that all conditions and obligations are fully complied with by the developer, in accordance with technical and legal requirements as well as the public interest,” he added.
The project has come under renewed public scrutiny following calls by Protect Karpal Singh Drive for the state government to halt the plan.
The proposed RM1bil project involves rehabilitating the former Jelutong landfill and reclaiming adjacent coastal land off Karpal Singh Drive.
The 34ha landfill, which operated for more than four decades before its closure, has long been regarded as one of Penang's most challenging environmental legacy sites.
The project was awarded to PLB Engineering Bhd under a joint development agreement signed in 2020 involving the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), the state government and the company.
