KUCHING: Sarawakian artist Alena Murang's award-winning music video "Midang Midang" showcases Sarawak's culture on the global stage, says Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The state Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister congratulated Alena, her video director Sarah Lois Dorai and hair and makeup artist Gabriel Padan for winning the Best Styling award at the Buenos Aires Music Video Festival 2020, which ended on Nov 29.

He hailed the "Midang Midang" video for showcasing the best of Sarawak's unique cultural diversity and identity, depicted in distinctive fashion styles and designs.

"It is truly an honour for all of us in Sarawak to have Alena as a sape (traditional lute)-playing artist who successfully conveys our culture, fashion and traditions in a beautiful music video that is really fantastic.

"It is also heartening to see that Alena's outfits and accessories featured in the video were from our local designers and traditional craft workers," he said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 3).

"Midang Midang" was also in the running for Best International Video - alongside Madonna - but the award was won by Spanish singer Maria José Llergo’s "A través de ti".

Karim also hoped the music video would stir interest in Sarawak's tourism attractions among viewers as it was shot in the Bario highlands and Miri's Tusan beach.

It was produced by film creative hub Project Room with Alena's Kanid Studio and launched on Nov 27 last year with support from the Sarawak Tourism Board and Miri City Council.

"We can consider supporting similar initiatives in the near future as they can do us a favour in carrying powerful messages to people outside Sarawak.

"Once again I congratulate Alena and her team for their international award. It is also an achievement for Sarawak as our cultural heritage and traditions are gaining recognition via a wonderful music video which has garnered 40,000 views on YouTube," Karim said.
