KOTA KINABALU: Educators and students are urged to excel and aim to become Nobel laureates.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said universities must restructure or come up with programmes that underscore their strength in an issue or topic.
“They should focus on what they are good at and delve deeper into what they know best so that they can contribute outside of campuses and become guides or a source of referrals,” he said when attending a scholarship handing over ceremony at Universiti Malaysia Sabah here yesterday.
He also called on educators to come up with ways to make the country proud by nurturing Nobel laureates and thus showing that the Malaysian education system was capable of competing in a global environment.
He also spoke on improving the standard of education in Sabah and the rest of the country, noting the importance of funding skills training and the like.
“We need collaborations with various stakeholders for education funds, training and so on because the government has limited funds to work on its own,” Muhyiddin added.
In this respect, he commended Tenaga Nasional Bhd for its corporate social responsibility in offering study grants for students nationwide.
A total of 154 students in Sabah received the scholarship this year.
