Emergency beacons do not grant automatic traffic law immunity

KUALA LUMPUR: Blue and red warning beacons do not give emergency and enforcement vehicles immunity to run red lights, speed or ignore road safety, says Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali (pic).

He noted that only six entities are authorised to use beacon lights: the police, Fire and Rescue Department, medical services (ambulances), Road Transport Department (JPJ), Prisons Depart-ment and Customs Department.

“Under Rule 24B-1 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1999 (2024 Amendment), motor vehicles are prohibited from being fitted with special warning lights unless they are specifically listed under the Sixth Schedule.

“Any use of beacons outside the list of authorised vehicles requires approval from the Transport Minister upon the recommendation of the JPJ director-general, as provided under Rule 24B-2,” he said yesterday.

His remarks came after he, accompanied by Kuala Lumpur JSPT chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa and senior Bukit Aman and Kuala Lumpur JSPT officers, inspected the accident scene at Jalan Sultan Ismail that claimed the lives of three members of a family on Wednesday morning.

Comm Muhammed Hasbullah stressed that enforcement and emergency vehicles using beacons while carrying out official duties must ensure that the route ahead is safe before proceeding.
