PETALING JAYA: Flash floods in a number of areas across five districts were inevitable after bouts of heavy rain on Saturday evening inundated several neighbourhoods.
Smart Selangor Command Centre (SSCC) said the districts affected were Hulu Langat, Sepang, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Klang.
As of yesterday morning, the Hulu Langat district was the worst hit with 22 locations flooded.
A total of 128 victims from 31 families in Hulu Langat were moved to three temporary relief centres.
Sepang was the second worst hit with 12 locations flooded and 137 victims from 31 families placed at three relief centres in Dengkil.
Bernama quoted a flood victim, Noraini Abdul Latiff, 40, as saying that she and her family members were woken up by neighbours at about 2am who told them that the water level in their area was rising.
“At first, the water began rising a little in the kitchen area.
“By 4am, the water had come up to waist level.
“We managed to save the electrical goods before the fire brigade came to take me and my three children out of the house,” said Noraini, who lives in Taman Timah.
She said the tents at the relief centre were arranged well and within a safe distance of each other in an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Mohd Najib Mat Supi, 58, said the heavy rain the night before led to water from an overflowing river to rise up.
“The water rose too fast. I had to brave the water while waiting for the fire engine to arrive,” he said.
Bernama also reported that the flood situation in Johor had fully recovered after all the evacuees housed at the temporary evacuation centre in SK Parit Keroma Darat, Muar, were allowed to return to their homes yesterday morning.
State health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan, in a statement, said five evacuees from two families were allowed to return after the floodwaters receded in Parit Keroma Darat.
“Due to the good weather today, all the evacuees at the relief centre have been allowed to return home,” he added.
The relief centre was the last one operating until yesterday morning.
