Newborn baby girl found inside a box by the roadside in Ampang

AMPANG JAYA: Police are investigating a baby-dumping case here after a newborn baby girl was found abandoned inside a box by the roadside.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Noor Azmi Yusoff said police received a call around 7am on Sunday (July 19) from a man who is believed to have found the infant at the Jalan Kabus-Jalan Bintang intersection.

"When we went to the scene, there was a baby girl with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached.

"She was found alive and placed in a box covered with leaves," he said.

There were no other documents with the child and she was brought to Hospital Ampang for treatment.

The child is said to weigh about 2.8kg and is believed to have been born less than 24 hours ago.

ACP Noor Azmi said police are looking for witnesses to the case and they can contact the investigating officer at 018-960 4202 or any police station nearby if they have any information.

The case is being investigated for child abandonment under Section 317 of the Penal Code and anyone found guilty can be imprisoned for up to seven years or fined or both.
