MIRI: The flooding in the interior of northern Sarawak has worsened, with at least 1,000 people in the rural Long Panai settlement in the upper Baram district having been cut off from the outside world.
"Long Panai is among the worst hit, with ground contacts saying that there are 129 families totally stranded, ” said Baram Peoples Action Committee chairman Philip Jau on Tuesday (June 30).
He added that all the timber roads to the settlements had been submerged.
"All land links to the outside world have been cut off," said Jau.
He added that flooding was bad in places like Long Panai, Long Bemang and Tutoh-Apoh.
"Their houses are under 1m of water already. The river tributaries are rising very fast and have overflowed their banks, ” said Jau.
Heavy rain has hit remote areas of the northern Sarawak districts of Baram, Marudi, Long Lama, Lawas and Limbang in the past few days.
