KUALA LUMPUR: Faint shouts of joy were heard inside the house of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin near 5pm yesterday as Istana Negara announced that the Bersatu president will be sworn in as prime minister today.
A buzz of activity started descending over the house, which had been calm since morning apart from a few members of parliaments (MPs) going in and out.
A few minutes after the announcement, former PKR leader and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin was seen leaving the house.
“Exciting times, one week of ups and downs, but in the end we managed to have Muhyiddin as the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia, alhamdulillah (thanks to Allah), ” she said after being asked to comment on the current situation by the media.
Muhyiddin himself came out soon after, flanked by his immediate family members, including his wife Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman.
Addressing the media, he said that he was grateful for the post.
“I thank Allah that I was given this job, and that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah) agreed (berkenan) to the appointment.
“I thank everyone for the moral support, ” the Pagoh MP said.
He also hoped that all Malaysians will accept his appointment.
“Pray for us to be able to bring about a better Malaysia, ” said Muhyiddin, who later performed the sujud syukur as thanksgiving.
Several other politicians were seen leaving Muhyiddin’s house shortly, including former PKR leader Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa and PAS secretary-general and Kota Bharu MP Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan.
“Alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah” was all Azmin, who is also Bukit Antarabangsa MP, said when he left.
Annuar said he was happy that the question of who will become prime minister has been resolved.
“I am glad it has been resolved according to the Constitution, ” he said.
The Ketereh MP also reminded Malaysians that: “We are still one family.”
Takiyuddin meanwhile told the media that Muhyiddin has the support of 114 out of the 222 MPs in parliament. He said this when questioned about the announcement.
“We have the support of 114 parliamentarians out of 222. That is no longer a minority government, ” he added.
In a viral video, the MPs had thumped the table loudly in support as Muhyiddin announced his appointment.
