KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad smiled and waved at pressmen upon leaving Istana Negara, where he had an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah over his resignation as Prime Minister.
Dr Mahathir, who arrived at the Palace at 4.40pm on Monday (Feb 24), left with his motorcade at 6.20pm.
His appearance at Istana Negara was his first public sighting since the shocking announcement that he was resigning as Prime Minister earlier Monday afternoon.
In a statement by the Prime Minister's Office, Dr Mahathir's letter of resignation was delivered to the King at 1pm on Monday before he went to meet the King.
It will be up to the King to decide whether to accept Dr Mahathir's resignation or ask him to stay in office.
