BEAUFORT: Leaders from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia showed the community a different side of themselves when they took part in a traditional sports event at Pimping Beach in Membakut.
Bersatu vice-president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Membakut assemblyman Datuk Ariffin Arif, Sabah Bersatu deputy chairman Masidi Manjun and Sabah Bersatu chief Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor showed off their skills playing the gong or kulintangan and wrapping kuih kelupis (a local dessert wrapped in banana leaf).
Mukhriz and Ariffin also tried their hands at a betel tree leaf pulling competition.
They had to pull the leaf with a small child sitting on it like a sleigh to the finish line.
Naturally, the local folk won.
The traditional sports programme themed “How are you Membakut?” was held to foster closer ties between local communities and visitors, including local leaders, in Sabah.
Ariffin said such programmes would help people remember the simple things in life and get their minds off daily stress.
