KOTA KINABALU: Veteran Sabah politician Datuk Karim Bujang was buried at his village in Kimanis about 70km from here on Sunday (Sept 20) evening.
A family friend Nerro Khan Sulaiman said Karim's remains were bathed at the Surau Kampung Sipanggil before being taken for funeral prayers at Surau Imam Abdullah in Kampung Brunei, Kimanis.
He said the five-term former Bongowan assemblyman was later laid to rest at the Bukit Kupang Muslim Cemetery in Kimanis.
Karim passed away suddenly at about noon Sunday at his house in Kampung Sipanggil, Putatan, near here. The exact cause of death was unknown but believed to be health-related.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor extended his condolences to Karim’s wife Datin Maimun Pg Bagul and their family.
“The late Karim was a political leader in Sabah who contributed his services to the state, May the entire family of the late be granted strength and patience in facing this loss and difficult time,” Hajiji said in his official social media post.
Karim, 73, leaves behind his wife and two sons and three grandchildren.
He served as Barisan Nasional-Umno’s Bongowan assemblyman from 1990 to 2013, after which he became a full-time successful businessman involved in the bird's nest industry. He made an attempt for a political comeback through Parti Warisan but failed to win the Kimanis parliamentary seat.
