KUALA LUMPUR: MCA Youth members should emulate the fighting spirit and hard work of the late Tan Sri Lee Kim Sai, says MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong Siaw Ting.
She said that Lee, who is synonymous with the glory days of MCA Youth, had set a high standard to all in the wing.
“His way of being courageous, vocal, daring to shoulder heavy responsibilities and accept the consequences is what we must look up to and draw strength from.
“With us upholding such a ‘Kim Sai spirit’, MCA will make a comeback on the political podium,” she said to applause during the 55th MCA Youth annual general meeting yesterday.
Lee, who was a former party deputy president and Youth chief, died on Nov 24 at the age of 82.
Before the AGM started yesterday, the delegates observed a minute of silence for Lee and former Wanita secretary-general Datuk Ong Chong Swen, 69, who died on Nov 18.
MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon opened yesterday’s AGM, which was also attended by Barisan Nasional Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and MIC Youth chief Thinalan Rajagopalu.
Wong said MCA Youth would follow the passion and aspiration of those who defended the people and their rights.
“Let us rise and make the party strong again for the people,” she said.
Calling on the delegates to remain steadfast on the right path, she said: “There are times when we have disagreements or are low in morale, however, we must be brave to carve our own path. We should not just be a normal Opposition party but part of an alternative coalition that has the vision and readiness to return to power.”
Wong also proposed for a Barisan Youth roundtable conference among the Youth secretariats and think-tanks for greater interaction on issues related to the youth.
“A lot of good ideas get overlooked due to a lack of communication and parallel integration,” she said.
In his speech, Asyraf agreed with Wong on the roundtable conference, saying that with dialogues and discussions, it would be a common agenda for Barisan Youth in the future.
Calling for more of such “harmony dialogues”, he said it was important to hold “open and sincere” dialogues.
“This should apply to even discussions about sensitive matters.
“We must not sweep things under the carpet. Otherwise, we are just pretending,” he said, adding that Barisan was different from Pakatan Harapan because all component parties have their own strengths and understand each other’s concerns.
“With sincere and open dialogue and discussion, we can be a better government for the people,” he added.
Calling on Youth leaders to ditch the old ways, Asyraf said Barisan’s thumping victory in the Tanjung Piai by-election was a clear sign that people wanted an efficient government.
“The people are sick and tired with an under-performing government,” he said.“We must not behave like how we used to but return with a new approach and culture.”
