Father, daughter killed after toppled container crushes car near Sepanggar port

KOTA KINABALU: A father and his daughter were killed in a freak accident on Sunday evening (Oct 18) when a toppled shipping container crushed their car near the Sepanggar port.

The 53-year-old father had just picked up his 24-year-old daughter from work, and the two were heading home when the tragedy occurred at around 6.20pm.

According to Kota Kinabalu OCPD ACP Shahrudin Mat Husain, a crane carrying a shipping container tipped over while carrying out roadside work just as the victims drove past.

Firefighters managed to extricate both victims from the crushed vehicle at approximately 9.55pm. Medical officials on site pronounced them dead shortly after at 9.58pm, and their bodies were subsequently sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for post-mortems.

Police have arrested a 49-year-old lorry driver to assist with investigations under the Road Transport Act 1987. Authorities are currently gathering CCTV footage and witness statements, and have urged anyone with information to contact investigating officer Insp Brymenedren Godon at 010-7768802 or visit their nearest police station.
