TAMIL school teachers and parents have expressed shock and disappointment that the Maanavar Muzhakkam and Pesu Tamizha Pesu programmes have been scrapped by Astro, Malaysia Nanban reported. The two programmes, which were aired for eight years and three years respectively, were popular with students and the Indian community.

The shows served as a platform for Tamil school students to develop their Tamil language abilities outside of classes, several headmasters said.

Students participated at district, state and even national levels in these competitions.

The Education Ministry also recognised these programmes and had given approval for the students to prepare and participate in them as part of their extracurricular activity, the headmasters said.

The programmes were even broadcast to and hosted in other countries such as Singapore, Dubai, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Myanmar.

While the cancellation of the programmes was attributed to financial issues, the broadcaster should reconsider the decision and keep them going for the benefit of students, the headmasters said.
