Village chiefs should carry out duties responsibly, says Tiong

SIBU: Community leaders and village chiefs need to carry out their duties responsibly and provide service to all regardless of political background, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing says.

He said the appointments were not merely positions, but a great duty that demands commitment, integrity and a willingness to help others, especially during difficult times.

"When given the trust to hold the position, do your duty to the best. Don't hold the position and shrug your duties," he said during the appointment of community leaders and village chiefs for Dudong and Bawang Assan state constituencies here on Sunday (Feb 8).

Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman, also reminded that community leaders need to always be with the people, especially during disasters or emergencies and not to neglect the welfare of residents in the area.

He added that he would not hesitate to change any leader found to have failed in carrying out their duties or losing the trust of their community.

He also stressed that community leaders should not be active in party politics to the extent of affecting their role as government representatives at the grassroots level.

He urged them to tackle issues properly and to refer to the district office or administration whenever needed to ensure a fair decision for all is reached.

“As community leaders, we need to be fair and provide service to all, regardless of party. The law is very clear in this matter," he said, expressing his hope that those appointed would strengthen cooperation and raise the quality of service for the sake of their local communities. - Bernama
