GEORGE TOWN: Holding Chinese opera performances during the Hungry Ghost Festival is an age-old tradition, but many communities here are turning to the cheaper and more modern kotai (stage shows) owing to dwindling donations.

The stage shows, which are usually organised by the Phor Thor committee as a form of entertainment for the community and wandering spirits, are seen as a more economical option, says Teo Chew opera organiser Lim Poh Aun.
