KUCHING: Sarawak will observe July 30 as a public holiday in conjunction with the coronation of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state would follow suit with the declaration of the last Tuesday of July as a public holiday.
"I thought the declaration was for the whole country. We will follow suit," he told reporters on Friday (July 5) when asked if the state government would announce July 30 as a public holiday.
On June 28, the chief secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Ismail Bakar said July 30 had been declared an additional public holiday for the nation under Section 8 of the Holidays Act 1951 for Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan.
He said for Sabah and Sarawak, the state governments could take action based on their own state laws.
The Sabah government later announced that it was declaring July 30 as an additional public holiday.Already a subscriber? Log in
