PETALING JAYA: The tribunal to investigate allegations of misconduct committed by the former Election Commission (EC) members in the run-up to GE14 will meet on Monday (Jan 28), says Attorney General Tommy Thomas (pic).
He said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, upon the Prime Minister's advice to establish a tribunal of judges, had appointed five retired Federal Court judges as members of the tribunal.
Tan Sri Steve Shim Lip Kiong has been appointed as the Chairman, while the other four are Tan Sri Zaleha Zahari, Tan Sri Suriyadi Halim Omar, Tan Sri Jeffrey Tan Kok Wha and Datuk Dr Prasad Sandosham Abraham.
"The tribunal will convene at the Klang Court on Monday, 28 January 2019 at 10am, to deliberate on matters pursuant to their mandate by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," Thomas said in a statement Thursday (Jan 24).
"Counsel assisting the tribunal in this matter are M. Puravalen of the Malaysian Bar, and Kogilambigai Muthusamy and Ann Khong Hui Li from the Attorney General's Chambers," he said, adding that Ann Khong will also serve as tribunal secretary.
The six former EC members in question are Tan Sri Othman Mahmood, Datuk Md Yusop Mansor, Datuk Abdul Aziz Khalidin, Datuk Sulaiman Narawi, Datuk Bala Singam Karupiah and Datuk Leo Chong Cheong.
It was reported on Oct 17, 2018, that the government would set up the tribunal to investigate them for electoral malpractice.
A day later, five members of the Election Commission announced their resignation. The remaining member tendered his resignation on Nov 27, 2018.
"Although the six EC members have resigned from office, the tribunal has a free hand to decide on all matters pertaining hereto as they deem fit, when making their recommendations to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," Thomas added.
