PETALING JAYA: Employees of "tit-tar" traditional Chinese medicine practitioner Chris Leong are working to free him from custody in Indonesia and secure his return to Malaysia.

Tit-tar is a traditional Chinese "bone-setting" practice, similar to chiropractic treatment.

According to a statement posted on Leong's Facebook page Friday (Jan 11), he and his team are safe in Palembang, Indonesia.

"We are working towards having the matter solved and having Master Chris Leong and team returned to Malaysia soonest possible," it said.

According to Indonesian media outlet Antara News Sumsel, Leong was one of 16 Malaysians who were picked up for allegedly violating their social culture visas.

Sumatra's office of the ministry of law and human rights head Sudirman D Hury said that authorities arrested the individuals in a four-star hotel in Palembang in a joint effort with several state agencies.

Sudirman was quoted as saying that the individuals had allegedly abused their visas by conducting commercial and healing services at the hotel.

They were arrested after an immigration enforcement officer who posed as a patient was charged 4.5mil rupiah (RM1,300) for the services.

The group had arrived in Indonesia on Jan 5 through the Kualanamu Airport in Medan before arriving in Palembang.

The statement also contained an apology for the cancellation of the event.

"To our patients in Jakarta and Surabaya, we deeply apologise that the event has been cancelled," it said, adding that refunds would be given.

It also gave assurance that Leong and his team would return to Indonesia.
