KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) has launched an attack against the minister in charge of the national unity portfolio, warning him not to abuse his position to undermine racial harmony in the country.
In what is a thinly-veiled reference to P. Waytha Moorthy, the former deputy prime minister said that he should not act as a "hero" of a specific religion.
"There shouldn't be anyone who feels compelled to be a hero to a specific religion, moreover if that person holds a portfolio in maintaining unity.
"Don't use your position as a platform to encourage provocation towards a religion," he said to reporters during a press conference at Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 27).
Waytha Moorthy, who is a Hindu Action Rights Force (Hindraf) leader, is a Minister in the Prime Minister's department in charge of the national unity and social well-being portfolio.
At the same time, Dr Ahmad Zahid also said it was unwise for certain groups to blame the police for alleged inaction over the pre-dawn pandemonium which lasted for two days.
"In this issue, everyone must follow our legal system and at the same time, everyone must respect one another in terms of religion," he said.
On Monday (Nov 26), Waytha Moorthy slammed the police, accusing them of not acting swiftly enough in a pre-dawn scuffle that took place earlier the same day.
He alleged that only one patrol car from the Subang Jaya police station arrived at the scene at about 4.15am, while the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) arrived at about 6am.
However, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Fuzi Harun refuted Waytha Moorthy's allegations, saying that the police were at the scene within 10 minutes of receiving a call from the public at 2.40am.
In a press conference on Tuesday (Nov 27), Selangor police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor said that the total amount of troublemakers detained by the authorities have swelled to 21.
According to Mazlan, the police are monitoring the situation "minute by minute" to maintain public order and safety.
