Dr Jeffrey Kitingan proposes new deal to replace 'outdated' Malaysia Agreement 1963

KOTA KINABALU: A new agreement for the Federation of Malaysia is being proposed to replace the "outdated" Malaysia Agreement 1963.

Sabah opposition leader and STAR president Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the time has also come to create a new Constitution of Malaysia to reflect the equal partnership of Sabah and Sarawak with Peninsular Malaysia, which would include full autonomy to the two Borneo states in a new structure.

He said that Sabah and Sarawak had been “junior partners” for the last 55 years, and the time was right for the two states to be restored as “equal partners” from all aspects.

He proposed a new Malaysian Union Agreement 2020 (MUA2020) as the best way forward for the “New Malaysia” under Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In a statement on Saturday (Sept 15) in conjunction with Malaysia Day, Dr Jeffrey said after 55 years, Sabah has come of age and is now capable of undertaking full responsibility.

He said that the Malaysia Agreement signed during the British colonial times was no longer practical for the current generation.
