PORT DICKSON: An allegation of vote-buying has surfaced in Port Dickson, just three days before voters go to the ballot box in Negri Sembilan this Saturday.
The incident, which was captured in a video that has since gone viral on social media, showed an individual taking pictures of voters’ identification cards while they were queuing up, as well as a snapshot of an envelop containing what is believed to be RM300.
It is said the incident happened in Bukit Pelanduk, which is under the Chuah constituency where a straight fight is taking place between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan.
The first to lodge a police report was Port Dickson MCA Youth chief Lim See Soon and Chuah candidate Pan Jeou Ching of Barisan at the Bukit Pelandok police station yesterday morning.
MCA secretary general Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the videos had been given to the police when the report was lodged.
“I urge the authorities, police and the Election Commission (EC) to take immediate action,” said Chong when contacted.
Chong also claimed that such activities happened in other seats, adding that MCA had videos of such instances.
“If you allow vote buying, the country is finished. But I think Malaysians are wise enough to vote accordingly,” he said.
Pakatan Harapan candidate for Chuah, Datuk Yew Boon Lye, also lodged a report at the same police station.
“I have never been involved in, condoned or instructed anyone to offer money or any form of reward in exchange for votes,” he said in a statement.
Yew said the authorities should act just as firmly if there had been slandering or circulation of false information meant to mislead voters, citing the Penal Code, the Communications and Multimedia Act and the Election Offences Act.
EC deputy chairman Dr Azmi Sharom urged those who witness such activities to report it to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
“Anyone who observes any act of corruption should make a report directly to the MACC,” he said.
Later in the day, the police later confirmed receiving reports of alleged vote buying in Chuah after the videos went viral.
