KUALA TERENGGANU: A straight fight against Pakatan Harapan in future elections is the way forward for PAS and other opposition parties, says its ulama chief Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamed (pic).
He said a straight fight would increase the chances of defeating Pakatan.
“For that, we will allow Umno to contest in the upcoming Port Dickson by-election.
“Although it is not official, we have somewhat reached a consensus with other opposition parties, not just Umno, but parties in Sabah and Sarawak as well,” he said at a press conference after the opening of PAS ulama wing’s muktamar here yesterday.
Mahfodz said that at a meeting on Wednesday, the ulama wing had agreed to give way to Umno to contest the by-election.
He also said that a mutual understanding on the matter was forged after the previous by-elections, which saw PAS giving way to Umno to contest in Sungai Kandis and MCA in Balakong. PAS contested alone in Seri Setia.
The Port Dickson by-election was called after its incumbent Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdulah from PKR vacated the seat.
PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is contesting the seat.
