KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has pledged to tighten the law in order to stop future incidents of babies dying in the care of nannies.
The promise came as yet another baby, 10-month-old Naufal Amsyar Nabil Fikri, died after falling from a crib at his babysitter’s home in Tangkak, Johor.
Naufal passed away yesterday morning – four days after being hospitalised at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.
“I feel very sad that such a tragedy has occurred again,” said Dr Wan Azizah.
“I have asked my ministry to get details on the case and also what we can do to prevent such cases from happening in the future,” she said at her Pandan constituency open house yesterday.
The Women, Family and Community Development Minister also said her ministry had held several discussions with the Attorney General’s Chambers on tightening laws on childcare.
“He (Attorney General Tommy Thomas) has said that there were several things that must be tightened.
“The laws that are available could have some loopholes or gaps that we must fill in and observe,” said Dr Wan Azizah.
Her ministry will bring the matter up in Parliament.
