PETALING JAYA: The rakyat can look forward to a New Malaysia, which DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang (pic) has dubbed a “Malaysian Spring”.

Lim said the first meeting of the first session of the 14th Parliament on July 16 shows that the country has embarked on the “re-building of a New Malaysia” with various parliamentary reforms and decisions.

He said Pakatan Harapan's win in the May 9 polls was the birth of the "Malaysian Spring", but said it will not end up as disastrously as the Arab Spring.

The Arab Spring was a series of anti-government protests, uprisings and armed rebellions that spread across the Middle East beginning December 2010.

“Malaysians who want a New Malaysia must learn the lessons as to why the Arab Spring went terribly wrong – the catastrophic absence and failure of institutional changes to build on and fulfil the hopes of the people for meaningful change in their societies,” said Lim in a statement on Thursday (July 5).

“That is why the first meeting of the 14th Parliament from July 16 to August 16, 2018 is very important and crucial in laying the foundation stones for a New Malaysia,” he said.

Two weeks after the adjournment of Parliament, Malaysia will be celebrating its 61st National Day on Aug 31. Two weeks after that, Sept 16, will be the 55th Malaysia Day celebrations.

Lim said that Malaysians will be able to celebrate a New Malaysia on both days.
