Nation’s youngest parliament rep joins PKR

Batu independent candidate P.Prabakaran cast his vote at Sek Men Chong Hwa in Sentul at 8.05am today. If elected, he will be the youngest parliamentarian in this country.

KUALA LUMPUR: Batu MP P. Prabakaran (pic), who won on an Independent ticket in GE14, has confirmed joining PKR.

This was announced by PKR vice-president and the constituency’s former MP, Tian Chua, at a Batu parliamentary victory celebration yesterday.

Prabakaran said he has always dreamt of becoming a member of PKR.

“I am proud to be a member of PKR and today, I have fulfilled my dream,” he said.

“Initially I only wanted to champion the aspirations of the youths in Batu.

“But after getting PKR’s full support, I was inspired to go all out,” he told reporters yesterday.

Prabakaran, 22, plans to champion the rights of university students to join politics and have freedom of speech.

The country’s youngest Member of Parliament also broke the 41-year-old record set by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when he became the youngest MP at the age of 23 after winning the Pekan parliamentary seat.

Prabakaran polled 38,125 votes to beat Barisan Nasional’s Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai who received 13,687 votes, PAS candidate Azhar Yahya (10,610) and Independent candidate Datuk V.M. Panjamothy (383). — Bernama
