Negri MB: Seremban and Nilai councils to be merged in April

SEREMBAN: The exercise to merge the Seremban and Nilai municipalities will be completed in April, and this will pave the way for Seremban to be declared a city in January next year.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said his administration would also have to table an enactment in the state legislative assembly before Seremban can be officially declared a city.

"We are looking at officially declaring Seremban a city next January in conjunction with the birthday of the state ruler Tuanku Muhriz. The official date will be decided by the palace," he said

Mohamad said this after chairing the state exco meeting at Wisma Negri on Wednesday (Feb 28).

The birthday of the state ruler is celebrated on Jan 14.

Mohamad said the Seremban City Enactment should be tabled in the state assembly in May.

The Cabinet had approved an application by the state government for city status for Seremban back in April 2012.

Asked if the quit rent and assessment rates would be increased once Seremban attains city status, Mohamad said there would be no changes.

"Even the fees for licensing or other services would not be increased," he added.
