Working his magic: Mohamed Taufique mixing in a paste of malva nuts and katira into a glass of Ais Tingkap at the stall in Tamil Street.

Way back in 1919, a Penang vendor began selling a special drink concoction from a shop window. And the name Ais Tingkap (window iced drink) was born.

While the days of the “window counter” may be long over – a proper hawker stall now stands near the popular window – the name remains.
