Wives cry foul over arrest of Turkish husbands

KUALA LUMPUR: The wives of two Turkish men who were earlier thought to have been abducted have cried foul over the arrests of their husbands.

Ayse Gul Karaman, whose husband is Turgay Karaman, said the police have no reason to detain her husband, who is an educator, and the other Turkish man, Ihsan Aslan, as they were not involved in illegal activities.

“We just read the news. But there is no reason to (arrest) because they work legally here, they have permit.

“They have never hurt anyone,” the 38-year-old said in between sobs.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed in a tweet that two Turkish men by the names of “T. Karaman” and “I. Aslan” had been arrested for activities that threaten the safety of Malaysia under Section 130 of the Penal Code.

“Maybe it (the arrest) was a misunderstanding. The police haven’t contacted us,” Ayse said at the Jalan Duta Court Complex yesterday.

Ainnurul Aisyah Yunos Ali Maricar, 35, said her husband Ihsan Aslan, 39, failed to return home from work on Tuesday night.

“We tracked down his GPS coordinates and he was seen near the Defence Ministry, Jalan Maktab.

“Since then, his phone has been switched off. I have lodged a police report and there is no news until now.

Earlier, lawyer Muhammad Faizal Faiz Mohd Hasani told a magistrate’s court here that Turgay, a witness in a trial set for yesterday and today, had been “abducted”.

 

Magistrate Siti Radziah Kama­rudin postponed the trial to May 19 for case management.

Turgay was supposed to meet his friend, Suheyl Ozcelik, at their lawyer’s office in Damansara Heights for a witness briefing at 4.30pm on Tuesday but did not turn up.

When contacted, Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the two were being investigated under the Security Of­fences (Special Measures) Act.
