Abang Jo sworn in as Sarawak's 6th Chief Minister


KUCHING: Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, 66, was sworn in as Sarawak's sixth Chief Minister at the Astana here, succeeding the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem who passed away on Wednesday.

He took his oath in front of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud at 4.05pm, Friday.

Abang Johari arrived at the Astana here at 3.39pm accompanied by his wife Datin Amar Jumaani Tuanku Bujang.

Taib and his wife Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib arrived at 4pm.

Abang Johari, who is also state Housing and Urbanisation Minister as well as state Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, has held various portfolios since he was roped into the state cabinet in 1984 as state Assistant Regional and Social Development Minister.

The nine-term Satok assemblyman then became state Agriculture and Community Development Minister as well as state Industrial Development Minister in 1987.

He remained industrial development portfolio in 1991 until 2000, before being appointed as state Tourism Minister.

In 2004, he was appointed state Housing Minister.

In a minor cabinet reshuffle in September 2011, he was appointed to his two current two portfolios.

Abang Johari, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president, began serving as Satok elected representative after winning a by-election in 1981.

He retained the seat in 1983, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016.
