THE speech by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a closed-door briefing for delegates appears to be a pre-general-election address, said Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
“I see it as mental and physical preparation for members. Most importantly, he said that the strength of the party is everything,” she said.
Another supreme council member, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, said Najib steered the delegates’ attention to the next general election, identifying DAP as the main enemy that Umno should defeat.
The Umno president did not pin a date for the GE but spoke at length on the importance for Umno and Barisan Nasional to retain power and ensure that everyone under the Malaysian sun would be taken care of.
He said Najib also spoke of how issues that DAP championed would affect the country, citing the example of a secular Malaysia.
“He explained that this would mean the country would have no official religion. And equality for everyone effectively means that there will be no privileges for bumiputras,” said Rahman.
Umno and Barisan Nasional would protect the interests of Malays and bumiputras but were also committed to ensuring the rights of other races were not overlooked, he said, recounting Najib’s words.
Rahman said Najib wanted members to know that the GE was not about Umno versus Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“He made it very clear that it is going to be about Umno and DAP.”
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said: “We don’t know when the GE will be called but the war drums have been sounded.”
