Government looking to boost international tourist arrivals

EFFORTS will be focused on increasing tourist arrivals from China, South Korea, Australia, Asean countries and various places in India as a way of boosting visitor numbers.

In a written reply to Jeff Ooi (DAP -Jelutong), Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said the Government was aiming to attract 31.8 million tourists next year and 33.1 million in 2018.

The ministry, he said, would also embark on smart partnerships with airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Etihad to promote Malaysia.

There were also plans for collaborations with tour agencies to organise chartered flights from China, South Korea and Taiwan as well as using Google, YouTube, TripAdvisor and Alitrip to promote Malaysia, added Nazri.

“The theme of Malaysia Truly Asia will continue to be used,” he said.

In a written reply to Idris Ahmad (PAS-Bukit Gantang), the Federal Territories Ministry said the RM650mil Taman Tugu Project was expected to rake in an annual revenue of RM400mil from tourists.

Aimed at preserving a 26.7ha rainforest, the ministry said it could not be equated to agricultural projects like oil palm plantations.
