KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to go on leave until the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) investigations are over.
"Let the investigations be independent. Once the investigations are over, become the PM again. This is what the people want. If there's nothing wrong, come back,” he said during a speech at Kelab Sultan Sulaiman on Monday night.
He said this was one way to clean the Prime Minister’s image, adding that there was no malice in this.
"I just want the investigations to be independent. It is good for the party.
"As the deputy president, I do not want this confidence crisis to continue until the elections. It will affect the party. People are angry with the problems that we are facing,” he said a day ahead of the Umno annual general assembly.
He added that some people had said there was no need to talk about this as action will be taken and that he could be sacked from the party.
"When I talk it seems, it will add more problems to the party. People ask me to do something to save the party,” he said, adding that he had given his suggestions to the party.
He said they could not let others ridicule Umno and should find a solution for the good of the party.
He also questioned why he was stopped from speaking at the assembly as it was the biggest platform to discuss issues.
“Since when Umno leaders are not able to listen to criticism? Is democracy eroding in Umno? Let Umno members speak and discuss issues. If there are differences of opinion, it is symbol of a democratic party,” he said.
