Taxi drivers arresting Uber and Grabcar drivers around KLCC

KUALA LUMPUR: Taxi drivers around KLCC are now arresting Uber and GrabCar drivers who pick up and drop off riders in their area. 

Big Blue Taxi Service boss Datuk Shamsubahrin Ismail (pic) said his drivers had already caught about seven ridesharing drivers here in the past two days. 

"We have started doing operations actively and caught more than seven Uber and GrabCars and we surrender them to the police for further action," he said when met by The Star here. 

In a later press conference, he clarified that of the seven Uber and GrabCar drivers that KLCC taxi drivers caught, three were handed over to the police. 

He added that the “operations”, which started two days ago, were being carried out by about 100 KLCC taxi drivers themselves. 

Shamsubahrin said the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) was not effective in stopping Uber or GrabCar, and that this forced taxi drivers to take matters into their own hands. 

"Uber, GrabCar, they're not afraid of SPAD...Taxi drivers have lost respect for SPAD," he said. 

SPAD said they may still be looking for a way to regulate Uber services here rather than banning them outright.
