Netizens spread rumours of flyover collapse at Jalan Kuching

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a road accident but pictures of the massive traffic congestion along Jalan Kuching during the early morning rush hour led to rumours of a collapsed flyover.

Dismissing the rumours, KL traffic chief Asst Comm Mohd Nadzri Hussain said there had been a collision involving a car, a van and three motorcycles along Jalan Kuching.

During the 8.30am incident, the van caught fire but no one was killed.

“I don’t understand how an accident can lead to rumours of a collapsed flyover. Even the fire was put out soon after it started,” he said, adding that those involved in the accident were later sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for minor injuries.

False information of a collapsed flyover was making the rounds on social media and WhatsApp soon after the accident. Messages of “collapsed bridge near Sogo” sent netizens into a frenzy.

Initial investigations showed that the car had been heading towards Kepong when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to swerve into the opposite lane.

“The car hit the van and spun around. Three motorcycles then rammed into the back of the van, causing it to catch fire.

“Firemen managed to quickly put out the fire,” he said, adding that the van driver and two motorcyclists were injured.

Police, added ACP Nadzri, were however still looking for the car driver and another motorcyclist.

He also advised the public not to spread unverified news on social media.
