Sabah quake: Muhyiddin visits damaged school and mosque

RANAU: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Sunday visited two schools and the district mosque, which were damaged following the earthquake that occurred on Friday.

The Ranau district mosque was the first location he visited, followed by the visits to the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Mohamad Ali and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Ranau.

Others accompanying him on the visit included Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, deputy chief minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, State Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and state secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Sukiman.

During the visit to the Ranau district mosque, he was given a briefing on the damages to the mosque, which is now closed, by Masidi who is also the state assemblyman for Karanaan.

During the visit to SMKA Mohamad Ali and SMK Ranau, he was given a briefing by Sabah education director Datuk Jame Alip. Also present was deputy education minister Datuk Mary Yap.

Muhyiddin later proceeded to Taman Kinabalu in Kundasang to attend a briefing on the disaster and the search and rescue operations for the victims trapped on the peak of Mount Kinabalu, before returning to Kota Kinabalu.

A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale occurred on Friday resulting in damages to several buildings in the district.

Besides the Ranau district mosque, two blocks of teachers' quarters at the SMK Ranau which housed 23 families suffered cracks which forced the occupants to vacate the quarters while the underground pipes burst resulting in water supply to the school being stopped.
