Council removes six ‘mysterious’ signages in Penang with the words ‘IS’

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Municipal Council has removed six “mysterious” signages put up at several locations on the island.

MPPP enforcement officers did this following a tip-off over the signages with the words “IS” (in apparent reference to Islamic State).

The signages, made using corrugated cardboards, were shaped like an arrow and painted in shades of yellow and orange.

Most were affixed to roadsign poles and on trees by the road.

“We do not know who put them up.

“My officers are making the rounds to check for more,” council public health and licensing alternate chairman Ong Ah Teong said.

“They have so far taken down six, found along Jalan Anson, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Masjid Negeri and Jalan Hamilton,” he added.

Ong said a license must be first be obtained before signages could be put up.

“Anyone who wants to put up a banner, signboard or any form of advertisement, must apply to the council’s licensing department,’’ Ong said.

“However, in this case, we do not have any records for these signages,” he added.
