A-G to review several sedition cases including Azmi Sharom's, says this is 'normal procedure'

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) will be reviewing several cases of individuals charged under the Sedition Act, including that of law lecturer Prof Azmi Sharom.

In a statement, Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said a review was normal procedure in any case that reached the prosecution stage, to ensure fairness and transparency.

He also said that he was aware of concerns that may have been raised.

The statement added that the AGC remained committed to carrying out their tasks in a responsible manner according to the letter of the law - especially in criminal cases - without any external influences.

Universiti Malaya law lecturer Dr Azmi, a columnist for The Star, was charged on Sept 2 with sedition over comments made on an online portal regarding the 2009 Perak crisis.

The lecturer was charged under Section 4(1)(b) and Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948, and posted bail of RM5,000.

His next hearing has been scheduled for Oct 3.

The crime is punishable with a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to three years, or both, if convicted. - Bernama
