JOHOR BARU: The Election Commission (EC) has clarified that there is no official dress code barring voters from wearing shorts to polling stations, following an incident where a voter was allegedly turned away.

EC Deputy Chairman Azmi Sharom stated that the only explicit clothing restrictions revolve around political branding.

“The only restriction is clothes with a candidate or party logo. There is no such [trousers or shorts] dress code,” Azmi said when contacted on Saturday (July 11).

The clarification comes in response to a viral Facebook post on Saturday, which claimed a man wearing a yellow T-shirt and khaki shorts was denied entry by security guards at SMK Tun Aminah in Skudai. The social media post included a photograph showing the voter in discussion with a guard outside the gates.

Under current election laws, voters are only restricted from wearing attire, symbols, or face masks that display political party logos or candidate branding within 50 meters of a polling station.

Voting for the Johor state election is underway and will remain open until 6pm on Saturday.
