PM meets children of Malaysian couple held in Sweden

KUALA LUMPUR: The four children of the Malaysian couple who were detained by Swedish authorities met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor at their residence in Jalan Langgak Duta on Saturday.

Aisyah Azizul, 14 and her three brothers Ammar, 12, Adam. 11 and Arif, seven, had earlier arrived from Stockholm at about 7am accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin and their aunt.

The Prime Minister and his wife spent some time with the children to find out how they were.

Najib said he had asked Hamzah to fly to Sweden to seek the authorities’ permission to bring back the kids.

“We are doing this because we are concerned about their welfare and I am happy that they are now back in Malaysia,” he said.

The children’s parents, Tourism Malaysia official Azizul Raheem Awalludin and Shalwati Norshal, a teacher, had been remanded since Dec 18 with the remand order having been extended three times.

They are being detained for alleged abuse of one of their four children.

Shalwati is alleged to have smacked their 12-year-old son on the arm for refusing to perform his prayers.
