PETALING JAYA: Relatives of the Malaysian couple remanded in Sweden for allegedly hitting their son have applied for a certificate of good conduct from Wisma Putra to meet the couple’s children in Stockholm.
Wisma Putra is expected to issue the certificate after approval by the Inspector-General of Police.
According to Umno Youth Community Complaints Bureau chairman Sheikh Nafiq Alfirdaous the document would be referred to a lawyer representing the couple’s four children.
“The relatives are still waiting to be officially allowed to meet the couple’s children. They will meet them after the document is obtained,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama yesterday.
Azizul Raheem Awalludin, a Tourism Malaysia director in Stockholm, and his wife Shalwati Nurshal have been detained since Dec 18 after allegedly hitting their 12-year-old son on the hand for not performing his prayers.
The authorities have extended the couple’s remand to Jan 30. To date, no charges have been filed.
The couple’s children are being cared for by a non-Muslim foster family in Stockholm.
According to reports, Swedish authorities were in the process of interviewing Muslim couples as their temporary foster parents.
