RMAF chief: Nuri crash may be due to operational factors, not technical

BUTTERWORTH: The RMAF denied that technical factors caused a Sikorsky S61A-4 Nuri (Nuri) helicopter to crash land in Pulau Perak, Kedah last Monday.

RMAF chief Gen Tan Sri Rodzali Daud said an investigation board led by a Lieutenant Colonel, a doctor, engineer and operations specialist had been set up to identify the cause of the crash.

He said pieces and oil from the aircraft were taken for tests, including statements from the crew and pilot.

"Initial investigation found the incident was not caused by technical factors as reported in the newspapers, but may have been a result of operations, including weather and handling of the aircraft," he told reporters.

He said technical factors were ruled out because the aircraft had undergone a second inspection several hours before at the RMAF Base.

"The helicopter was inspected before it took off for a supply trip from Butterworth to Pulau Perak," he said.

He added that three personnel, including pilot Captain Asmawi Azmi, Captain Nuradlina Ab Manah and Air Sergeant Mohamad Khairi Abd Rahman, sustained minor injuries and are now recuperating at home.

Rodzali said Malaysia now has 15 Nuri aircraft which are responsible for assisting the RMAF with utilities, communication and search and rescue operations.

"The RMAF has plans to upgrade the Nuri due to factors such as obsolescence, cost and safety," he said.

He added that Malaysia also has 12 Eurocopter aircraft which they plan to use to replace the Nuri, expected to begin operating in June or July next year. - Bernama
