In support of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Unitar University College Kuala Lumpur (UUCKL) and D’Tandoor Food Industries Sdn Bhd recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop industry-ready talent for Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

Through the partnership, students are expected to gain practical, real-world experience, as well as exposure to professional culinary environments and industry practices, directly enhancing their employability, according to a May 12 press release.

The MoU was signed by D’Tandoor International Group of Restaurants chairman Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Malik Abdullah and UUCKL vice-chancellor and chief executive Dr Jagdeep Singh Jassel. Witnessing the signing was Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry secretary general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot.

Highlighting the importance of industry-academia collaboration, skills development and workforce readiness within the hospitality and culinary sectors, Jagdeep said such partnerships play a key role in preparing a workforce that can drive Malaysia’s tourism growth.

Unitar works with industry partners to bridge academic learning and real-world practice, he said, adding that this helps ensure graduates have relevant skills, adaptability and readiness to contribute to the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The collaboration also underscores the significance of industry access and facilities in nurturing a workforce that meets evolving real-world demands, particularly as Malaysia continues to strengthen its position as a preferred tourism destination, he added.

Abdul Malik said the group, as an industry player, believes in investing in talent development by working closely with academic institutions.

The collaboration, he added, enables the sharing of industry practices and facilities while supporting the development of a skilled, industry‑ready workforce that will contribute to the long‑term growth of Malaysia’s hospitality sector and tourism ambitions.
