FINANCIAL constraints often prevent students from pursuing tertiary education.

With the recent setting up of a scholarship programme, students now have a new avenue to seek financial support to complete their undergraduate studies.

An initiative between Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia (KL & Selangor), the Tzu Chi Undergraduate Scholarship Programme offers students the opportunity to receive a full scholarship or a tuition fee differential subsidy.

The full scholarship covers programmes such as education, early childhood education, psychology, accounting and other related fields.

The tuition fee differential subsidy, on the other hand, is open to students from all programmes.

A total of 25 scholarships are available. Current and new students who are eligible and facing financial difficulties are encouraged to apply.

The launch of the scholarship programme marks a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between UTAR and the foundation to create opportunities for students.

Both parties have previously signed a memorandum of understanding as collaborative partners and have established close cooperation in areas such as institutional development, academic exchange and volunteer service.

UTAR president Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat and Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia (KL & Selangor) deputy chief executive officer (CEO) Tien Chin Hsiang signed the memorandum of agreement (MoA) to launch the scholarship at the varsity’s Sungai Long Campus on June 5.

“We look forward to seeing students complete their university education and alleviate their families’ financial burden through this meaningful programme,” Prof Ewe said in a press release.

He encouraged scholarship recipients to apply for an exchange programme at Tzu Chi University in Hualien, Taiwan, to learn about its cultural and humanistic values.

He also expressed hope that the students would one day give back to society, help those in need, and keep the cycle of kindness alive for generations to come.

Since its establishment, UTAR has awarded scholarships and financial aid totalling more than RM2bil to over 23,000 students, enabling them to pursue and complete their tertiary education successfully.
