KOTA KINABALU: Sabah allocates over RM100mil for state scholarships this year to fund 2,182 new tertiary students and existing recipients, Chief Minister Hajiji Noor says.
“Education remains a priority as it is the foundation for producing knowledgeable, skilled and competitive human capital,” he said at the 37th Sabah State Excellent Scholarship Awards ceremony here on Thursday (July 30).
The new funding brings total scholarship recipients under the state scheme to 13,389.
The Sabah State Government Excellent Scholarship awarded 10 additional students this year, expanding its recipient pool to 60.
Yayasan Sabah also increased the number of Sabah Excellent Scholarship Award recipients by 10 to 50 students.
Hajiji said educational opportunities were also being expanded in healthcare, with 30 Sabahans to be selected for diploma and degree programmes in medical and health sciences, physiotherapy and cardiovascular technology.
The Sabah State Education Fund has aided 15,629 recipients with over RM25mil since launching in 2022.
The Sabah State Government Excellent Scholarship has benefited 835 recipients, involving RM141.29mil.
The Sabah Islamic Religious Council spent over RM12.7mil on higher education support between January and June.
