MULTIMEDIA University has conferred the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Achievement Award on Dr Kevin Koay, who was part of an international team that captured the world’s first images of a black hole.
The award was presented by MMU president Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Rafi Mohamed Eshaq, during a public talk entitled “From Cyberjaya To The Event Horizon Of A Black Hole” at its Dewan Tun Canselor in Cyberjaya.
Commenting on Dr Koay who is an MMU alumnus, Prof Ahmad Rafi said the university is proud to have him share his journey on being part of the team that made history by capturing the black hole images.
“It shows that hard work together with guidance from excellent teachers and lecturers go a long way in bringing about not only success, but satisfaction in one’s work, ” he said.
The talk is important for the country as Prof Ahmad Rafi described Dr Koay as a hero who can inspire others to find success in doing what they love.
“Malaysia needs more scientists and engineers. We hope that Dr Koay is able to inspire more people towards embracing technology, not just as tools, but in their careers, ” he added.
Dr Koay spoke on the technicalities of his work, which he was clearly passionate about. He started off with his personal background followed by his passion for black holes.
His audience listened attentively to what he was saying.
The images were captured using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), an Earth-sized “virtual telescope” with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution.
The EHT is an international project that links telescopes deployed at high-altitude sites around the globe.
A team of over 200 researchers worked together from around the world.
