NATIONAL progress is shaped not only by public governance but also by leadership across key sectors.
Realising this vision requires leaders who champion excellence, innovation and integrity in their respective fields.
In recognition of their outstanding contributions to nation building, institutional integrity and sustainable progress, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) recently conferred Honorary Doctor of the University degrees upon former chief justice Tun (Dr) Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and sustainable property development leader Datuk (Dr) Izwan Hasli Mohd Ibrahim.

The honours were presented during the university’s 2026 graduation ceremony held in Putrajaya on July 9.
Throughout her career, Tengku Maimun has been widely regarded for strengthening institutional integrity and upholding justice, while inspiring Malaysians through principled leadership.
The conferment recognised her distinguished service to Malaysia’s judiciary and her steadfast commitment to democracy, the rule of law and nation building, according to the varsity in a press release.
Accepting the honorary degree, Tengku Maimun said the honour was a tribute to the many individuals who have dedicated themselves to upholding justice, integrity and the rule of law in service of the nation.
She also extended her congratulations to the graduating class of 2026.
“Embrace the opportunities ahead. Let your core values be the compass that navigates your professional legacy,” she advised.
Meanwhile, PNB Merdeka Ventures chief executive officer Izwan Hasli was recognised for his leadership in the property development sector, where he has championed sustainable development and community-focused urban transformation.
His work reflects a strong commitment to environmental responsibility, social impact, and the role of private sector leadership in advancing Malaysia’s nation-building agenda, the press release read.
Reflecting on his career, Izwan Hasli shared his enduring belief that development is fundamentally about improving lives and creating communities that will shape future generations.
“My hope is that our young graduates will continue to innovate and lead with purpose.
“Success is not measured merely by personal achievements but, more importantly, by the positive impact we create for our communities, our industry and ultimately our nation,” he said.
The graduation ceremony, held across two sessions, saw some 309 graduates celebrating the completion of their studies.
The morning session celebrated graduates from the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society and the School of Social Sciences, while the afternoon session featured graduates from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
The ceremony was presided over by HWU (United Kingdom) principal and vice-chancellor Prof Richard A. Williams, HWUM pro-chancellor Datuk (Dr) Nicol Ann David, and HWUM provost and vice-principal Prof Mushtak Al-Atabi.
Prof Mushtak told graduates that “success belongs to those who do not just navigate the path, but who also become the mapmakers of the future”.
“By anchoring ourselves to a clear purpose, balancing conviction with the humility to adapt, and mastering the art of asking deep, critical questions, we can confidently step into uncharted spaces. The open road ahead demands that we trust our inner compass and start drawing the future the world is waiting for,” he said.
